Coordinator, Environmental Sustainability

The Ottawa International Airport Authority is accepting applications for a Coordinator, Environmental Sustainability position.

Reporting to the Manager, Environmental Sustainability, the Coordinator role provides support to the Environmental Sustainability sub-department in projects, studies, documentation, and correspondence.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Participates in the development and maintenance of the Authority's following environmental management plans:
    • Noise Management Program
    • Stormwater Management Plan
    • Salt Management Plan
    • Glycol Mitigation Plan
    • Waste Management Plan
    • Greenhouse gas (GHG) Management Plan
    • GHG Stakeholder Engagement Plan
    • Storage tank inventory management
    • Spill Response Plan
  • Supports the Noise Management Program by monitoring aircraft noise complaints, responding to complaints in both official languages with technical details, researching incidents on a computerized flight tracking system, and generating complaint statistics and reports
  • Arranges and hosts bi-annual Noise Committee Meeting
  • Provides environmental regulations expertise to advise on compliance issues
  • Monitors airport stormwater quality by inputting data from remote monitoring stations using specialized software, and manages supplies and equipment
  • Maintains and develops records and databases on environmental management plans
  • Takes a lead role in sampling, examining and reporting on a wide variety of physical, chemical and biological products relating to air, water, wildlife and soil contamination
  • Participates in the evaluation of the Authority’s level of compliance with wildlife conservation and water, soil, and air quality standards and environmental legislation, policies and guidelines, and assists in developing and implementing means to achieve compliance - both for the Authority and its tenants
  • Conducts regular waste audits and provides detailed reports
  • Organizes and promotes e-waste, hazardous waste and battery recycling collection programs
  • Participates in the development and delivery of Net-Zero Challenge and sustainability strategy including GHG inventories, accreditations applications, and grants, and researches new environmental initiatives and technologies to reduce the Authority’s environmental impact
  • Assists in Environmental Site Assessment and auditing, and in environmental impact assessments
  • Keeps inventories of on-site hazardous materials/storage tanks
  • Drafts environmental reports as required
  • Initiates purchase orders and receives invoices
  • Participates in industry meetings and working groups
  • Supports various administrative tasks

The successful candidate must:

  • Operate scientific and computerized equipment;
  • Work unsupervised in isolated outdoor conditions, in all seasons and weather;
  • Handle complex work sequences i.e. operating samplers with a high degree of accuracy, precision and care;
  • Demonstrate their scientific, technical and public relations skills (noise complaints);
  • Handle sensitive information and hazardous materials in a responsible and professional manner; and
  • Demonstrate a high level of safety awareness.

These abilities, combined with a professional and positive attitude, will ensure success in building positive working relationships in a team environment.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS 

  • College diploma or University degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Studies, Biology, Chemistry
  • Minimum of 2 years of related experience
  • Proficiency with environmental monitoring and sampling techniques for air, water, and soil
  • Ability to prepare clear and accurate reports, technical documents, and presentations
  • Excellent public relations and stakeholder engagement abilities
  • Experience organizing and leading meetings or committees
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate records, inventories, and databases
  • Strong analytical, research skills and high attention to detail
  • High level of safety awareness in handling hazardous materials and strong knowledge of safety data sheets (SDS)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both official languages (English and French)
  • Advanced knowledge of word processing and data/spreadsheet software
  • Strong knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word and Powerpoint)
  • Natural ability to adapt to new technologies and various software (i.e. Flight Tracking System, etc). 

ASSETS 

  • Skilled in using scientific and environmental monitoring equipment and software
  • Familiarity with stormwater monitoring systems and remote data entry software
  • Experience with Geographic Information System mapping software or flight tracking systems

ABOUT THE POSITION 

Job requirements

  • Have of a valid driver’s license (Class G or equivalent)
  • Provide a driver’s abstract (issued within the last month)
  • Obtain an Airport Vehicle Operator’s Permit (AVOP)
  • Successfully obtain a security clearance check for an Airport Restricted Area Identity Card (RAIC)
