Airports and law enforcement – Partners in canine security training

Published on January 11, 2016

Building on the tremendous success of its inaugural training event last April involving attendees from around the world, the Ottawa Airport Authority’s K9 Unit is currently hosting the Canadian Police Canine Association in the delivery of a “Train the Trainers” canine behavior shaping course.  The Authority is pleased to have 20 police canine teams in its facility for nearly two weeks while they learn and experience new, innovative and industry leading training techniques.

The focus of the course is for these instructors to enhance and further their skill sets and capabilities. Armed with this knowledge, they can return home and share the techniques and newly acquired skills with other canine teams in their respective regions. Teams from as far away as Halifax and Vancouver, and all areas in between, are represented.

The Ottawa Airport Authority has had a K9 capability for several years and deploys animals that must meet the same exacting standards as our law enforcement canine colleagues. Training of this nature ensures that we maintain best industry practices and allows us to work alongside our partners in law enforcement. The collective primary goal is to ensure the safety of the communities and facilities under our watch.

“The Authority’s K9 team is known and respected both in North America and abroad. I am proud of the leadership role they have taken where training and skills development are concerned, as well as their willingness to share their knowledge with other agencies” said Mark Laroche, Airport Authority President and CEO. “Each participant has the same goal of ensuring the safest environment possible, and these training sessions contribute to achieving that goal in a very meaningful way”.
