Heavy Equipment Mechanic


The Ottawa International Airport Authority (Authority) is accepting applications for a Heavy Equipment Mechanic.
Reporting to the Head Fleet Maintenance, the successful candidate will provide maintenance and repair services for the upkeep of the Authority fleet of maintenance equipment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Perform routine maintenance checks on a wide variety of *equipment to ensure proper and reliable operation
- Resolve problems reported by Heavy Equipment Operators
- Perform a full range of overhaul and repair work on light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles
- Make diagnoses and assessments of mechanical failure by using specialized testing equipment
- Troubleshoot, adjust, and align parts and system components
- Conduct road tests and final inspections of equipment to ensure proper performance
- Maintain provincial trade certification, technical knowledge and other qualifications
- Participate in maintenance/skills training programs
- Prepare accurate and detailed vehicle and equipment inspection reports
- Perform inventory checks and recommend acquisition of supplies
- Perform other duties and/or responsibilities as assigned
*equipment – snow blower, runway sweeper, articulating loader, grader, single and tandem dump truck equipped with plow, wing and towed sweeper, tractor, street sweeper, front-end loader, backhoe, farm type tractor, line painting, mower (numerous types), sand spreader, decelerometer, snow roller, brush cutter, pressure washer, hydraulic lift, air compressor, generator, weed-eater and welder.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
- EDUCATION
- Class “310-T” mechanics certificate
- EXPERIENCE
- A minimum of three (3) years repairing and overhauling gasoline and diesel powered light and heavy mobile equipment (including dump trucks, tandems, graders and plows, etc of more than 5 tonnes)
- Electric welding
- Electrical accessory installation and troubleshooting
- Principles of repair and overhaul of light/heavy mobile equipment including gasoline/diesel power plants and related components i.e. chassis, power train, fuel exhaust, electrical steering brake and auxiliary hydraulic systems and auxiliary hydraulic systems and their components
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of the trade
- Airside vehicle operating procedures
- Safety awareness
- Read and interpret repair manuals, technical documents, and wiring diagrams
- Prepare accurate and clear work orders
- Safe use of tools, machines, and equipment common to the automotive or heavy-duty mechanical trade
- Making sound decisions and problem-solving
- Work independently and assess priorities
- Have a high attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
- Adapt to changing assignments and operational needs.
- Demonstrate effective interpersonal and teamwork skills, and a professional and positive attitude that supports strong working relationships
- Take initiative on new assignments
- LANGUAGE
- Good oral and written communications skills in English
ASSETS
- Class “421-A” Heavy Duty Mechanic’s Licence
- Class “425-A” Agricultural Equipment Technician
- Air brake endorsement
- Forklift inspection and repair
- Bilingualism (English and French)
ABOUT THE POSITION
Job requirements
- Have a valid driver’s license (Class G or equivalent)
- Provide a driver’s abstract (issued within the last month)
- Obtain a security clearance check for an Airport Restricted Area Identity Card (RAIC)
