Firefighter

The successful candidate will be a member of the Authority’s Airport Fire Service team, which operates at YOW in accordance with the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Respond to emergency situations according to the regulatory requirements of the CARs
  • Help develop tactical operations for emergency situations
  • Participate in various operations as required by the Captain
  • Preserve life, property, and environment
  • Prevent, extinguish and protect exposures from fire loss
  • Administer advanced first aid and CPR/defibrillation
  • Participate in fire suppressions operations
  • Participate in salvage and overhaul operations after a fire has been extinguished
  • Research on technological change and evaluate programs and procedures relating to operations and equipment
  • Participate in Airport community education and public relations

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (Grade 12) or academic equivalent diploma
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Level 1 & 2
  • Qualified to NFPA 1072 (472) Operations level
  • Standard First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) level Health Care Providers (HCP) / Basic Life Support (BLS) certificates

LANGUAGE

ASSETS

  • Qualified to NFPA 1003, 1002, 1041, 1021 Level 1
  • Emergency Medical Responder certification
  • Other relevant specialized training, qualifications, or experience
  • Demonstrated community service and/or volunteer involvement
  • Current annual live fire certification as per the regulatory requirements of the CARs
  • Bilingualism (English and French)

ABOUT THE POSITION

Salary

$117,254 per year in accordance with the current Collective Agreement (July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2025 rates). 

Note: New recruits shall be remunerated as follows:

i) 70% for the first six (6) months
ii) 80% for the next six (6) months
iii) 90% for the following twelve (12) months

Job requirements

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Be physically fit
  • Able to handle the physical, emotional, and mental efforts required of the job
  • Able to complete a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
  • Able to complete an airport Firefighter qualifying program, NFPA 1003 Standard
  • Have a valid driver’s license (Ontario Class DZ or Class 3, or equivalent)
  • Provide a driver’s abstract (issued within the last month)
  • Successfully obtain a security clearance check for a Restricted Area Identity Card (RAIC)
  • Obtain within 90 days of hire
    • An Airside Vehicle Operator Program permit – D (AVOP – D)
    • A Restricted Radio Operator’s Certificate
